How to Plant Bahia Grass in the Fall
- 1). Remove the existing grass, if necessary. Place a shovel under a corner of your lawn and press down on the handle so that the head of the shovel pushes upward. Your grass will loosen at the roots so that it can be removed in sections. Place the grass in a yard waste bag or in a compost pile. Repeat until the entire lawn in removed.
- 2). Hold a rake by the handle and press its prongs 1/2 inch into the soil. Pull the rake toward you, leaving furrows in the soil. Continue until the entire lawn area has been furrowed.
- 3). Scatter the Bahia grass seeds evenly on the soil. Make sure that there are no more than 15 seeds per square inch.
- 4). Cover the seeds with 1/4 inch of topsoil. Place 1/4 inch of straw over the topsoil, covering it evenly. This will protect the seeds from birds and other scavengers.
- 5). Water the Bahia grass seeds until the soil is moist, but not so much that puddles form. When pressed into the soil, your finger should sink in to the first knuckle. If not, add more water. Keep the ground moist by watering at least once a day until the grass begins to grow, then you can cut back to watering once a week.
