    • 1). Obtain the minimum education requirements to apply as a wildlife officer in Ohio. Complete an associate degree or an undergraduate core program in fish and/or wildlife management, criminal justice, environmental law enforcement or another related field prior to applying. Be familiar with fish and wildlife management techniques, water sampling techniques, defensive driving, and general equipment maintenance, and be able to recognize threatening conditions and take appropriate action. You also need the ability to interpret technical material in books, journals and manuals.

    • 2). Visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website at dnr.state.ohio.us to determine if positions are open for applications. If positions are available, submit an online application.

    • 3). Pass the written proficiency examination and an oral interview. The examination and interview are conducted by the Department of Natural Resources in order to determine whether you meet the minimum requirements to proceed in the application process. If you are successful in the interview, you will be offered a conditional offer of employment and continue in the selection process

    • 4). Pass a physical fitness and swim test. Three tests are used to measure physical standards. During your physical fitness exam you must complete one minute of sit-ups, one minute of push-ups, and a 1 1/2 mile run. You must also be able to swim 100 yards in five minutes or less and tread water for a minimum of five minutes.

    • 5). Pass a background check, which involves a polygraph test, and a psychological examination. These evaluations are used to assess your moral character, emotional stability, reputation in the community, and your interest in serving people. The background check will also examine your driving record and whether you have any prior criminal convictions or used illegal drugs.

    • 6). Submit to a medical examination and drug test. All applicants must complete a medical examination to ensure they do not have any health impediments to successfully executing the job. You must also submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drugs. If you test positive for any illegal drug, you will not be offered employment with the Department of Natural Resources.

    • 7). Complete training and orientation at the Wildlife Officer Training Academy and earn an Ohio peace officer’s training certificate. After completing the screening process, you may be offered employment as a wildlife officer cadet. The term of the employment as a cadet will be for at least six months, during which time you must complete orientation and training at the academy. This training lasts approximately 25 weeks and includes Ohio Peace Officers Basic Training and specialized training by the Division of Wildlife.

    • 8). Complete your probationary period as a wildlife officer. Once you successfully complete your training as a cadet, you will be employed as a wildlife officer by the Department of Natural Resources. All new wildlife officers must complete a one-year probationary period during their first year as an officer.
