Seborrheic Dermatitis Condition & Symptoms

13

    Definition

    • Seborrheic dermatitis is a fungal infection of the skin, accompanied by scaling, redness and tiny red bumps of the affected area.

    Cause

    • The yeast, Malassezia, along with excessively oily skin are the primary causes of seborrheic dermatitis. Some health conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, may also cause this condition.

    Primary Symptoms

    • A yellowish, whitish scaling or dandruff on the scalp and sides of the nose and eyebrows are primary symptoms. Excessive skin oiliness with redness and tiny red bumps under the scaly skin are also common symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis.

    Treatment

    • Shampoos containing zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, sulfur, selenium sulfide, tar, and/or ketoconazole help to control the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis. Also, a prescription cortisone lotion can help bring relief.

    Considerations

    • Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic condition, but it can be managed. Following a steady treatment with an anti-dandruff shampoo can prevent flare-ups.
