How to: Outdoor Water Fountain
- 1). Paint the inside of the terracotta pot with acrylic sealant, in a well-ventilated area. Allow the sealant to dry thoroughly and then apply a second coat. Allow the second coat to dry before moving to the next step.
- 2). Place the pot on its side. Place the small pump inside the pot. Thread the pump's cord through the drainage hole in the bottom of the pot. If the drainage hole is not large enough use a round rasp to enlarge the hole. Leave 10 inches of the electrical cord inside the pot.
- 3). Carefully trim the cork with a knife, so it will fit into the drainage hole of the pot. Wedge the cork, into the hole next to the electric cord. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and seal the hole with caulk. Allow the caulking to dry per manufacturer instructions.
- 4). Place two brick pavers in the area where the outdoor water fountain will sit. Arrange the pavers parallel to each other and 3 inches apart. Place the pot on top of the pavers. Thread the cord in between the two pavers. This will allow the cord to come from the bottom of the pot without getting smashed by the pot's weight.
- 5). Place three small bricks on top of each other in the bottom of the pot. Make sure the bricks are level. Place the pump on top of the bricks. This will allow the pump enough height to spray the fountain above the water level.
- 6). Fill the pot with water and plug the pump into a grounded electrical outlet. The fountain should be spraying up. Adjust the flow-rate of the pump and the height of the bricks until the fountain achieves the desired effect, without spraying out of the pot.
