DIY Swimming Pool Wall Panels
- 1). Choose construction materials that are resistant to corrosion and water damage, which is the top priority, alongside safety, for any DIY swimming pool. Aim for materials which do not readily oxidize (react with oxygen in the atmosphere) because this will deteriorate their surfaces and make them less suitable as swimming pool walls. Gunite, fiberglass and vinyl are the most suitable materials, according to The Entertainment Magazine (EMOL).
- 2). Calculate the size of pool required before purchasing any of the materials. Measure the height, depth and area of the pool you wish to create using a tape measure. Dig out the pool if you are sure where you want to situate it because this gives a better idea of the dimensions. Consider these dimensions carefully when selecting the sizes, shapes and thicknesses of the wall panels.
- 3). Purchase ribbed, polymer-based panels, each with a vinyl liner, for maximum water retention, rigidity and strength. Panels are available with 6-inch or 2-foot radii corners, according to James White Pools (See Reference 2). Install curved corner and straight panels with a tight ground-to-wall fit and allow for water circulation.
- 4). Fit buttresses as well as panels to create fully-supported structures in the ground, then fill the area between the buttresses with earth or concrete. Take into consideration the required entrance points and exit routes of water for the pool, because forgetting these and concreting will result in serious, costly reworking.
- 5). Position flow controls, lighting circuits and steps before completing the final surfacing and adding any water.
