Why Sustainable Urban Development?

18
There is no doubt about it, but the evolution of technology for the past decades has been pacing really fast that now, everybody seems to be dependent on it. Cellular phones, computers, household appliances, and other conveniences are all products of technology. In fact, the car that you are using is one great example of technological development. But the big question is, do these conveniences also bring good to the environment? If you feel that the answer is a big "No", then you have to take a look at sustainable urban development, so that you may enjoy all these conveniences without having to sacrifice the environment so much.

When you say sustainable development, it means that you get to enjoy living in this planet, using its resources, without entirely sacrificing the needs of future generations. This is not an impossible feat, because in cities, where much of pollution and waste materials are concentrated, sustainable urban development can be achieved.

Sustainable urban development is very important so that lesser damage to the environment will come about. It cannot be denied that much of the activities in cities contribute to a great deterioration of the environment. For instance, the cars that traverse the road all produce greenhouse gas emissions, which create a huge environmental impact. In fact, the current climate change was primarily caused by these gas emissions that are produced, not only by cars, but also by coal-fired power plants and other sources.

Aside from the greenhouse gases that are given off by cars and power plants, waste materials are another problem in cities. One good example is plastic. Due to the busy lives of those living in cities, plastic has become a part of daily life. You see, petroleum is primarily used in manufacturing plastics, and this is actually considered as a nonrenewable resource, which means that every time it is used, it cannot be replaced anymore.

If you look at your surroundings, you will see that there are simply a lot of things that contributes to the depletion of environmental resources. But, nothing is too late. You can still do something so that the environment could still be preserved.

The only way that you can achieve sustainable urban development is to go green. For instance, try to go for locally produced organic foods. These foods would not need to travel long distances unlike other food products. Whenever food is delivered to a far place, the delivery trucks would be producing a lot of greenhouse gas emissions, and at the same time, would be consuming a lot of fuel. To minimize your use of electricity, you could go for Energy Star appliances. These appliances consume lesser energy, thereby burning a lesser amount of fossil fuels, and would also lessen greenhouse gas emissions. You could also opt for natural shampoos made up of non-chemical based ingredients.
