How to Troubleshoot a Toshiba PCX DOCSIS Cable Modem
- 1). Reset the PCX by unplugging its power cord for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. This basic reset is the first thing any tech support rep will have you do because it can potentially solve the vast majority of problems the cable modem can encounter. After the modem fully reboots, check connectivity again to see if the problems are resolved.
- 2). Unscrew the coaxial cable from the coaxial input on the PCX and check the needle that runs through the middle of the cable for any bending or damage. Also pass a soft, dry cloth over the modem's coaxial input itself to clear any dust or static electricity buildup. Screw the cable back on and again reset the modem in the manner described above. This is a useful troubleshooting tool for nearly any problem the modem will encounter, such as a slowdown of upload and download rates or an intermittently dropping connection.
- 3). Unplug the Ethernet cable from the PCX's Ethernet port and from the Ethernet port of the computer or networking device into which it is plugged and plug both sides back in. This is an essential step if the "PC" LED is not lit up on the front of the modem, or if the computer is displaying an error message of "A network cable is unplugged" or something to that effect. If the modem and/or PC still does not pick up the Ethernet connection after resetting the cable, the Ethernet cable may need to be replaced altogether.
