How Do You Build an Amplifier Speaker Cabinet?

    • 1). Lay your front panel down on your work surface, and decide on the placement of your speakers. Place one face down on the panel and draw around it, giving you a visual representation of where each speaker will be located.

    • 2). Cut the holes in the front panel, and stretch speaker cloth over the side that will be facing outward, stapling it in place along the edges. Attach the sides to the front panel using the wood screws. The front panel should ideally be angled back slightly from fully vertical, projecting the sound upward toward head-height. To create this effect, attach the front panel to the side-panels right at the very front of the amp, at the "floor end." At the top-end, offset the screws into the side panels, away from the front edge, around 10-20mm.

    • 3). Cut holes in the side panels to accommodate recessed handles if necessary. Attach the sheets that will form the base and top. Fit the rubber feet and corner protectors. Do not fit the cabinet handles until after all the speakers are fitted and connected. The holes in the side panels make accessing them much easier.

    • 4). Attach the speakers. Screw in the 8-10 grub screws around the speakers' edges into the rear of the front panel. Connect speaker wire to each of the 4 speakers, and cut it to length so that they reach the top of the cabinet.

    • 5). Connect the speaker wire to the terminal connector jack, and drill a hole in the second plywood sheet, around 1" from the top edge. The socket should be as near to the top of the cabinet as possible to ensure the cable from your amplifier will reach, but not so close to the edge that it compromises the strength of the back sheet.

    • 6). Fit the jack socket into the hole you drilled in the rear panel, then screw the rear panel to the rest of the cabinet. Fit the recessed cabinet handles, and your speaker cabinet is ready to be connected to an amplifier.
