1776 - The Continental Congress at Philadelphia adopted a resolution of independence. Two days later on July 4th, the Congress would formally adopt the Declaration of Independence.
1881 - President James Garfieldwas shot. He would die on September 19, 1881.
1890 - The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was passed.
1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act.

1937 - Amelia Earhart, First female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was last heard from on this day.
1961 - Ernest Hemingway, Author. He won the Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and the Sea.
