Becoming a Provider for United Health Insurance Company

26

Why would a doctor join the UnitedHealthcare network?

    • According to its most recent annual report, UnitedHealthcare is the second-largest health insurance provider in the United States. It represents 30 million Americans and provides benefits to some of nation's largest companies, including General Motors and oil company Chevron. It says that it works with 560,000 doctors and 4,800 hospitals nationwide.

How to join the UnitedHealthcare network?

    • Doctors have two ways of joining the UnitedHealthcare network--by phone or computer. Calling (877) 842-3210 puts doctors and practices in touch with the UnitedHealthcare credentialing center. Those preferring to fill out forms online can proceed to United's website to begin the process.

    What credentials must providers present?

    • While laws vary from state to state, every provider must show basic credentials. These include a proof of current licenses from practicing states, Drug Enforcement Administration certification, proof of all education and training, a listing of all hospital privileges and proof of all liability and malpractice insurance. The provider also must agree to allow UnitedHealthcare to audit patient and billing records.
