How to Make Compound Cable Strings

    • 1). Determine the length of the cable required for the compound bow. Either check the manufacturer's specifications on the bow or measure the old string.

    • 2). Determine the number of strands of string material the string will require. This is dependent on bow weight. If your bow has a weight of 20 to 25 pounds, use eight strands of Darcon, adding two strands for each additional 10 pounds of weight.

    • 3). Set up the jig. It has two winding posts on each end that can swivel. Rotate the ends so all the winding posts are in a straight line. Wind the Darcon around the farthest wrapping posts on the jig until the desired number of strands has been met, keeping in mind that each complete loop of string material is two strands. Tie the ends on the first wrapping post. Keep the tension in the strands as tight as possible when tying them off.

    • 4). Rotate the ends of the jig again so the wrapping posts form a rectangle. The locking mechanism in the middle will keep the jig in place against the tension of the string material.

    • 5). Mark a spot halfway between two end winding posts. Wind the serving thread over and under the string material 15 times and then reverse its direction and feed back through both the string material and initial serving thread. Pull it tight. This secures the end of the serving thread.

    • 6). Continue feeding the serving material through the string material until you have covered an area of length that is equivalent to the size of the intended loop at the end of the bow string. Do not cut the serving material from the spool.

    • 7). Rotate the winding posts at the end of the jig that has the serving material. Bind the parallel strings together with the serving material, continuing from the spool. Use the same over-and-under technique. Continue to about 3 inches from the next winding post and then reverse the direction, feeding the serving material back through both the string material and other serving material. This creates and secures the notching loop on the string. Repeat this on the other side of the jig to make the other notching loop.
