Gardening Ideas for Kids in School
- Help your child scoop dirt into a Styrofoam or plastic cup, and bury grass seeds in the dirt. Have your child draw a face on the cup. Place the cup on a windowsill and water daily. Once the grass grows, your child will have a face with a crazy hairdo! Children can trim the grass to make different looks. If you have a cat, plant cat grass. (Seeds can be found at pet stores.) Children will enjoy making a treat for their pet.
- Dig up a small area in the yard. Then, help your child pick some vegetable seeds to plant. Water and weed the garden daily with your child. Teach her about what nutrients come from the vegetables. Harvest the vegetables when they're ripe, and let your child make a meal or snack out of his produce. Carrots, green beans, eggplants and tomatoes are easy "beginner" vegetables to grow.
- Purchase a clay pot, and let your child paint the pot with acrylic paints. Once dry, fill the pot with dirt and help your child plant flowers inside. This also makes a great gift.
Nasturtiam are a non-toxic flower that is good for young children. - Build or buy a container to put in your yard to make your own compost. Encourage children to dump leftover food into the bin, and add earthworms to it. This will help kids learn how to reduce waste and fertilize their garden.
