How to Add a Metal Cover to a Pickup Truck
- 1). Remove the two bolts that hold the plywood in place with a wrench to remove the plywood packaging from the ends of the canister. Discard the bolts and the plywood.
- 2). Install the rail guide bolts supplied with the cover into bolt holes vacated by the two bolts you previously removed.
- 3). Place a box in the bed of the truck so when you place the canister into the truck bed, the top of the canister sits approximately 2 to 3 inches above the bed sides. Use the packaging the canister came in.
- 4). Remove the cover from the top of the canister and place it off to the side.
- 5). Connect the rails to each side of the canister. If the rails have a curved guide where the cover will slide into the rail, remove the blanket guides on each end of the canister and then slide the rails into the rail grips on the side of the canister until they lock in place. If the rails do not have the curved guide, just slide them into the rail grips until they lock in place.
- 6). Slide the canister against the front of the truck bed and remove the supports from under the canister. The rails now rest firmly on the sides of the truck bed.
- 7). Place a plastic shim supplied with the kit between the rails and the bed if you locate any gaps between the truck bed sides and the rail larger than 3/8 inch. This keeps the rails from warping when you install the clamps.
- 8). Place each clamp evenly spaced down the length of both rails. The rails clamp from the bottom and hold the rail firmly against the truck bed. Tighten the clamps into place with the wrench.
- 9). Place the rear rail across the side rails approximately 6 to 12 inches away from the tailgate and secure it with the clamps.
- 10
Apply a small amount of Edwards UV protectant to a cloth and wipe down the rubber weather strip seals on the guide rails. - 11
Insect each drain tube for o-ring seals and then slide the tubes into the bottom of the canister. Slide the other end of each tube into the drain holes located in the front of the truck bed. - 12
Place the top cover onto the canister and secure it to the canister with the two black top cover screws. Pull the cover to its full open position. Place the pull strap over the driver's side rail. Pull the paper off the back of the Velcro strip and place it on the underside of the rail.
