How to Make Red Cedar Mulch
- 1). Remove leaves, small twigs, and pine needles from your red cedar branch pile. Use a measuring tape to measure the diameter of the branches. Most chipper/shredders handle branches up to 3 inches in diameter. If you have larger branches, you will need to rent a heavy-duty chipper/shredder.
- 2). Put on protective goggles and gardening gloves. This will prevent eye injury from flying pieces of wood or splinters.
- 3). Turn the chipper/shredder on and insert the first red cedar branch. Slowly feed the branch into the hopper. Push it down with the handle of a broom, if necessary. Do not put your hands or any metal object into the hopper.
- 4). Repeat with each red cedar branch, feeding them into the chipper/shredder one at a time.
- 5). Move the chipper/shredder over to the side so it is clear of the new mulch pile. You can either spread the red cedar mulch as it is, or feed it back into the hopper to grind it down to a smaller size.
