    • 1). Choose legal websites to download your movie files from prior to downloading them. According to the Motion Picture Association of America, there are various factors that determine whether a site is legal or illegal. If the movies are still in theaters or have not been released on DVD, if the sound is blurry or low quality and if the downloads are free and unlimited, it is likely an illegal site. For a complete list of legal download sites, see the MPAA website in the Resources section of this article.

    • 2). Locate the downloaded movie file on your computer. When you downloaded the film, the program asked you where you wanted to save the film file. The location chosen then is the current location of the film file, unless you have manually moved it.

    • 3). Click on the file once to highlight it. Right-click on the highlighted file and choose the "Properties" option, which is often located near the bottom of the options list.

    • 4). Click on the "General" tab to get more information about the file type. Under "File Type", it will state the name and extension of the video file. Examples of common player extensions include (.wmv), (.divx) and (.rm).

    • 5). Find the "Opens with" line, which is typically located directly underneath the "File Type" section. This will state the name of the video player needed to play the video file. Examples include Windows Media Player (.wmv), DivX video player (.divx) and Real Media Player (.rm).

    • 6). Click the "Start" menu in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen and choose the search option. Type the name of the player required to see if you have it installed on your computer. Click Enter to run a search on your computer.

    • 7). Click on the program if you have it on your computer. Open it and click "File," "Open file" and select your video file. If you do not have the video file program on your computer, visit the player format's website by running an Internet search using the player's name as a keyword phrase. You will need to download a copy to view the video file.
