Tips for Beginners at Texas Hold"em Poker

If you are a beginner to the game of Texas Hold’em poker, this article will give you a simple strategy to follow that will almost immediately improve your game. Over the past few years, Texas Hold’em poker has taken the world by storm. At first glance, Hold’em appears to be a relatively simple game. Each player tries to make the best hand from his/her two hole cards and the five community cards. Don’t be fooled by the simple premise of Hold’em. Hold’em can be very complex and can involve a lot of strategy. It takes many people years to learn the different strategies and use them to their advantage. If you are just starting to learn how to play the game, do not be scared. In this article, I will tell you what starting hands to play and what hands to throw away. If you know what starting hands to play and what starting hands to fold, Hold’em gets a lot simpler and you won’t put yourself in precarious situations.

The following hands are the only hands you should play if you are a beginner to Hold’em:

1. A-A
2. K-K
3. Q-Q
4. J-J
5. 10-10
6: 9-9
7. 8-8
8. 7-7
9. A-K suited (for example, ace of hearts and king of hearts)
10. A-K offsuit (for example, ace of hearts, king of spades)
11. A-Q suited
12. A-Q offsuit
13. A-J suited
14. A-J offsuit

If you only play these 14 hands, you will notice an immediate improvement in your game. When you only play these 14 hands, you will probably notice that you are playing a lot less hands, which is a good thing. One of the biggest problems that beginners have is that they play too many hands. By only playing the hands I listed above, you will probably only be involved in 10 – 15% of the pots. This may sound boring, but you have to think of the main reason why you are playing poker. You are mainly playing poker to make money.

If you limit yourself to only playing these 14 hands, you greatly increase your chances of winning more pots. When you enter pots with these hands, chances are that you will have the best hand, or one of the best hands. I’ll give you an example of what I’m talking about. Let’s say you enter a hand with A-Q offsuit and another player had K-Q offsuit. Before the flop is dealt, you already have a huge advantage. Now let’s say the flop comes and it’s 10-4-Q. At this point, you have top pair with top kicker by having two queens with an ace. Your opponent also has top pair, but his kicker is only a king. Your opponent doesn’t know what you have, so he’s probably feeling pretty good about himself. Unfortunately, your opponent practically has no chance of winning this hand since you’ve got top kicker.
