In today's economy it tough for teens to find jobs after school and in the summer.
Many traditional jobs for teens have been phased out or are being done by adults.
But you don't have to spend time filling out applications and hoping someone will hire you.
You can make your own job and provide a real service to people.
You can start your own dog walking service.
That's right.
Dog walking is a growing industry in today's busy world.
Even in this tight economy, the American Pet Products Association estimates Americans will spend $45.
5 BILLION dollars on their pets this year.
That's a 5% increase from 2008 and a 60% jump from 2001.
People are spending more and more on their pets at a time when retail sales are 30% lower than the year before.
Of course, where you live will have a lot to do with the demand for dog walkers.
Cities are best and places where there are more apartment dwellers.
The demand is least in rural areas.
If a dog has a farm to run around on he won't need to be walked.
But there are plenty of people willing to pay someone to walk their dogs.
Think about it for a minute.
Do you live in a city or even a medium to large town? Are there apartment buildings near where you live? Condos? If the answer to any of those questions is "yes," then there is probably a need for a dog walking service where you live.
There are several great advantages to having a teenager job like dog walking.
First, you set your own hours.
Work your schedule around school and even leave time for friends.
The most important thing is that if you tell someone you'll walk their dog at a particular time, be sure to do it.
Your customers will come to trust and depend on you.
Second, you can be your own boss.
You'll be doing the work and guess what, you get to keep all the money.
You set the prices, you make the schedule, you decide who to work for.
Maybe you don't like pit bulls or toy poodles.
You don't have to walk pit bulls or toy poodles.
You're in charge of your business.
Finally, and this is a big one, no experience is necessary.
This is a great teen job where you can gain experience.
When a customer no longer needs you or you decide to quit, you can ask for a letter of recommendation to show future employers you're a good and dependable worker.
It's amazing what people will pay someone to do the work they don't have time to do.
Why shouldn't they pay you? It's simple and you can really earn money, but it is work.
