How to Spray Paint Melamine
- 1). Wipe the surface of the melamine with a damp sponge to remove any dust, dirt or other debris. For any sticky or greasy buildup on the melamine, add a few drops of liquid dish soap to a bowl of water and dip the sponge in that prior to wiping it down. Allow the surface to dry completely.
- 2). Rub very fine (220- to 240-grit) sandpaper across the melamine to scuff the material and make it easier for the paint to adhere. Remove the dust left from the sanding with the damp sponge and let the melamine dry.
- 3). Lay plastic sheeting down on the ground and place two scrap pieces of wood on top of the plastic. Set the melamine on the wood scraps and spray an even coat of primer over the top and ends. Leave the primer to dry according to the drying times listed on the can.
- 4). Lift the piece of melamine and place wax paper over the scrap wood to keep the melamine from sticking to the wood. Place the primed side of the melamine down on the wax paper and scrap wood and spray the second side with primer. Let that side dry completely.
- 5). Spray the melamine with an even coating of enamel paint across the top and ends. Dab any paint runs with a clean, dry cloth to stop drips from forming on the edges. Leave this to dry for about one hour and then check it closely for thin areas. Apply a second coat as necessary and then allow it to dry for the interval listed on the can.
- 6). Place new strips of wax paper and turn the melamine over to spray the second side the same as the first. Don't move or touch the melamine for at least 12 hours to allow the paint to thoroughly cure.
