The Fundamentals of Ice Machines
Ice machines are purchased for a wide variety of uses but are most likely to be found in commercial settings such as restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues, markets, etc. There are three basic factors that determine the best type of ice machine for each end user.
1) The end use of the ice – Ice machines generate ice in either a cube or flaked form or variations thereof. Venues such as bars and restaurants generally purchase ice machines that produce cubed ice as that is the preference of their customers. Flaked ice is the preferred choice for establishments that are displaying or serving chilled food such as salad/juice bars or meat, produce and seafood at a market.
2) Quantity – One of the biggest factors in determining the right ice machine will be the amount of ice output that will be required. The best choice will have a capacity that comfortably exceeds daily requirements to prevent the machine from being in ice making mode for extended periods.
3) Space and location – An ice maker will require some extra space around it to allow for ventilation and cooling. Never place an ice machine near heat generating appliances such as ovens, dish washers etc. as the external heat will reduce the output capacity of the machine. Be prepared to reconfigure the room where the ice machine will be located to allow for a large enough unit to meet demand.
Many establishments simply cannot function without plentiful ice. In the process of making the decision on the right ice machine for your interests, consider the above mentioned factors to make sure that your new machine meets demand, produces the right form of ice, and is located in a space that allows it to function efficiently.
