Some areas of Alaska severely limit alcohol importation. Residents of Kotzebue, Alaska, for instance, may only bring a certain amount of alcohol into the area each month. Since May 1, 2005, Kotzebue residents may only transport a total of 12 gallons of malt liquor, 24 liters of wine, and 10.5 liters of distilled spirits into the city within a given month. - Some areas of the country do not allow people to transport alcohol in anytime of the year. According to Dr. David Hanson at the State University of New York Potsdam, 18 million U.S. residents live in "dry counties." Sizable areas of Mississippi, Kentucky and Texas do not allow alcohol and some prohibit the transportation of alcohol across their boundaries. Those caught trying to transport alcohol into these areas will be convicted of either a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the amount.

Some states, such as Massachusetts and Indiana, prohibit people under the age of 21 from knowingly operating a vehicle with alcohol in it, regardless if the container is open or not. In Massachusetts, for example, anyone under the age of 21 is prohibited from transporting alcohol unless they are riding with a parent or guardian. Those caught may be arrested, fined or both and may have their license suspended for three months.
