How to Draw a Western Sign
- 1). Draw an outline for your sign first. Center your drawing on your paper and draw a vertical line the width you'd like your sign to be. This is the top of the sign. Draw a second line below this one (how far depends upon how high you want your sign). These lines form the top and bottom edge of your sign. They don't need to be perfectly straight, since the finished sign should have a handmade Western look to it.
- 2). Draw a jagged vertical line on each side of the two horizontal lines you drew. These will be the sides of your sign. The jagged points should vary in length to give the illusion of broken or roughly cut wood.
- 3). Draw letters on your sign in block style, with uneven lines. The object is to go for an almost branded look, as if the letters were burnt onto the wood. The letters can spell the name of a town or whatever you want the sign to say.
- 4). Draw thin, small wavy lines throughout the sign to create the illusion of wood grain. The lines should be randomly placed but cover the entire sign. Draw one or two small side oval shapes to create knots in the wood.
- 5). Thicken the edges of the sign with a brown color pencil to give them some definition. Color the sign light brown, then darken the wood grain lines with dark brown to make them stand out. Color the lettering with dark brown, then use black around the edges of the lettering to enhance the burnt look of the lettering.
