Things to Do in Seward, Alaska

8
I've probably spent at least two months of my life in Seward, Alaska so far, and while I currently live in Wasilla, I'm seriously considering moving there again this fall.
Seward is a wonderful place to live, with everything you could want -- gorgeous summers, water, mountains, glaciers, wildlife, and good, fresh food.
However, when tourists visit Seward, they often don't know what to do, and as a result, they end up wasting their valuable vacation time trying to find the "best" things to do.
To help save you some time and make your Seward vacation experience the best it can be, here are my tips of things to do in Seward.
Visit the shops It almost goes without saying that you should visit the local shops in Seward.
Local retailers carry a fun selection of Alaskan arts and crafts.
Boat ride Please don't come to Seward without taking a boat ride out into Resurrection Bay.
I promise you, you'll be very disappointed if you don't take a boat ride, where you will see all sorts of sea life, possibly including whales.
There are few things more exhilirating than seeing a whale within 100 feet of your boat.
And if you've never seen or heard a glacier calving, you are missing a truly spectacular experience.
Walk to Exit Glacier If you've never seen a glacier up close and personal, you'll want to take an hour or two and go over to Exit Glacier, where you can walk a couple of trails right up to the glacier.
The lower trail is generally a flat and easy walk, although if it has rained a lot there may be a few trouble spots.
That being said, if you can make it through those spots, you'll find some spectacular views.
Take a dogsled ride Finally, if you'd like a little more adventure in your day, ask around town about the Seavey family dog sled rides.
In the summertime the Seaveys put wheels on their dog sleds, and you and your loved ones can be pulled around the Alaskan wilderness by real Alaskan sled dogs.
Rent a kayak If you'd like some real water adventure, rent a kayak or canoe, and get out into the water and do your own thing.
Hike - hike - hike Seward is located on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, which is home to hundreds of miles of hiking trails.
Just ask the people at your hotel for information about the hiking trails in the area.
Enjoy the food Finally, enjoy some of the freshest seafood you'll get anywhere on the planet.
Just ask around for the best restaurants, but don't be surprised if the locals send you to a dive that serves a meal called a "Bucket of 'but" -- Halibut, that is.
The dive you're looking for is named Thorn's Lounge, and while it probably scares off more tourists than it serves, the "Bucket of 'but" is often regarded as the best halibut anyone has ever had in their life.
