How to Travel With Baby Milk
- 1). Store breast milk at room temperature for up to eight hours. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that, once pumped, breast milk can be stored safely at room temperature for up to eight hours, meaning that travelers who intend to use their milk within this window need not worry about refrigeration.
- 2). Pack milk that you intend to keep for more than eight hours or baby formula in a cooler. To avoid potential contamination or spoilage, the CDC recommends that all formula be stored chilled and that moms toting breast milk that they intend to keep for more than eight hours store it in a cooler chest while traveling.
- 3). Place milk in a quart freezer bag for easy inspection. When flying or going through customs, your milk likely will be subject to inspection. To make this process easier, place it in a transparent freezer bag when packing.
- 4). Declare your formula or breast milk when moving through security checkpoints. The Transportation Security Administration has lax guidelines when it comes to formula and breast milk; however, they do ask that moms and dads declare breast milk and formula when moving through customs to facilitate the inspection process.
- 5). Pack an electric bottle warmer. Select a warmer that plugs into a standard wall outlet or one that slips into a cigarette lighter for long car trips. If planning a trip to a foreign land, purchase the necessary voltage adapter before beginning your journey.
- 6). Pack a breast pump and bottles for on-the-go feedings. Select a small, portable breast pump that you can easily stow in your bag and use on the go so that you don't have to slow down for feedings.
