Basic Skirt Tutorial
Although I tend to share Lolita fashion with you, life can not only have Lolita fashion. Sometimes, I want to study other things. So today, I will share a tutorial about how to make basic skirt with you and hope you will be interested in it.
1. Lay out cloth and pin pattern, the fuller you want your skirt, the more panels you should cut out. Make sure to keep the cloth flat and smooth as you cut.
2. With right sides together, pin edges of panels together.
3. Sew side seams (5/8€ seam allowance)
4. Stitch sides of waistband together, having a fold at the top and open at the bottom.
5. Cut the corners of the waistband where you've sewn. This will keep it from getting bulky.
6. Turn waistband right side out and iron flat.
7. Press open the side seams you just sewed, this will help them look crisp and flat.
8. See? Looks less poofy than before you pressed the seams open.
9. Cut open around a 4€ slit in the back of the skirt.
10. Machine hem the opening you just cut.
11. With right sides together, pin the waistband to the top of the skirt.
12. Stitch, making sure to catch all layers. Pleat or gather skirt to fit waistband if need be.
13. You guesses it. Press the waistband seam open.
14. Add it should look something like this.
15. TO MACHINE HEM: Fold over once, press if you want to.
16. Fold over again, keeping the hem slender. If you're a beginner, you can have a wider machine hem.
17. Stitch down the center of the hem.
18. Press the newly sewn hem. Even if you pressed down the folds as you went, press it again.
19. Fold a small rectangle in half to go behind the back opening (to keep all under-garments hidden). Stitch.
20. Clip corners, turn right side out, and press flap.
21. Hand stitch the flap under the back slit, so that it lays flat.
22. Put 2 grommets in each side of the waistband. For best results, use an awl instead of cutting holes in the fabric.
23. Ta da! We has grommets.
24. And it's finished! If you want slits in your skirt, just don't sew the side seams all the way down, then machine hem the raw edges. See, that wasn't so hard, was it?
