Build Your Own Windmill – Harness the Power

8
In the not-so-distant past, windmills were a common sight at mills and farms. Today, wind energy is once again becoming an important source of power generation. It is a viable option as an alternative energy source, as opposed to non-renewable sources of energy. Windmills can help you produce electricity at home, and reduce your power and utility bills. If you have an interest in building projects, and saving energy around your home, you should build your own windmill. Even if you are not handy with tools or building things from scratch, kits are available that can help you step by step to build a windmill.

If you are a regular handyman who routinely makes home improvements, you are probably already excited to build your own windmill. All you need are the materials! Like the huge wind turbines that are being used around the country, which are advanced versions of windmills, you can achieve the same outcome for your home on a smaller scale to generate electricity. It is all about harnessing the energy of the wind to generate power. To begin, you should first make some calculations. Find out the average wind speed and wind direction in your area. This will determine the individual aspects of your windmill design.

The main goal of your windmill design is to match the speed and force generated by the rotor blades with the force needed for the cranking of the generator. The best way to achieve this is in the design of the blades. Longer blades mean more power generation, and more electricity. Longer blades or more blades also mean slower blade rotation. Tip speed ratio is also important to consider when designing your blades. When you build your own windmill, blades can be made of plastic or wood. PVC plastic sewer pipe is an excellent material that withstands strong winds.

Once you have designed your blades, find a generator. You may purchase one, or build your own. Some that may work with a few adjustments are old electric treadmill motors, car alternators, washing machine motors or car disc brakes that have been converted into permanent magnet motors. Your windmill generator will need to be mounted in a weatherproof container. After you have accomplished all of the necessary requirements to build your own windmill, which are not all covered here, you will need to mount it.

You may want to mount it on your roof or on a tower stand on its own. It just depends on the best location. It could be a real DIY Energy Savings
