How to Replace a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Water Pump
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- 2). Remove the fan shroud mounting bolts and remove the fan shroud. Remove the nuts holding the cooling fan/clutch in place and then remove the cooling fan.
- 3). Loosen the bolts that hold the water pump pulley on the water pump. Loosen the serpentine belt by turning the belt tensioner bolt, then slip the belt off the water pump pulley. Remove the pump pulley bolts and then remove the pulley from the water pump.
- 4). Open the filler cap on the radiator, then open the radiator drain valve and drain the radiator. Close the drain valve. Loosen the clamps from the coolant hoses at the water pump and remove the hoses from the pump.
- 5). Remove accessory brackets and bolts from the water pump, as applicable. Remove the water pump attaching bolts. Keep track of the location and length of each bolt, as they are not identical and must be reinstalled in the proper location. Remove the water pump from the engine.
- 1). Clean all gasket material from the water pump mounting surface on the engine. Apply RTV sealant to the water pump mating surface on the engine, following the instructions on the RTV sealant. Position the water pump on the engine and install the mounting bolts finger tight.
- 2). Tighten the water pump mounting bolts securely using a socket wrench. Reinstall any accessory mounting bracket bolts, as applicable. Slide the coolant hoses onto the water pump fittings and tighten the clamps securely.
- 3). Install the water pump pulley on the water pump. Slip the serpentine belt over the water pump pulley. Check that the belt is routed properly, then tighten the belt by turning the belt tensioner bolt.
- 4). Reinstall the fan and tighten the bolts securely. Reinstall the fan shroud and install the mounting bolts.
- 5). Fill the radiator with antifreeze engine coolant, then replace the radiator cap. Connect the negative battery cable.
- 6). Start the engine and check for leaks. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature, then shut off the engine and allow it to cool completely. Check the coolant level and add coolant as needed.
