A Home Remedy for Removing Gophers
- 1). Search your yard for gopher mounds. Usually, gophers build somewhat flat mounds with dirt pushed more to one side of the mound, rather than in an asymmetrical pattern.
- 2). Dilute 1 part castor oil with 1 part water, and place in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture in and around any mounds you locate to repel gophers and make them abandon their dens. Gophers don't like the smell of the oil.
- 3). Cut fresh jalapeno peppers into large, 1-inch chunks.
- 4). Add the peppers to wood or straw mulch, approximately one pepper per 1 lb. of mulch.
- 5). Lay the mulch in a border around plants and other parts of the garden you want to protect against gophers, who will be repelled by the smell of jalapeno peppers and the presence of the mulch itself. The pepper-infused mulch should be placed within 4 inches of plants the gophers are known to attack in your yard.
- 6). Wait for home remedies to take effect. Once gophers find that their dens are unlivable and their food supply is unattainable, they should move on.
