How to Make a Round Accent Pillow
- 1). Decide on the diameter your want for your round accent pillow and add 1 inch. If you are using a pillow form, measure its diameter and add an inch. Decide how deep you want the pillow to be and add 1 inch. Make a note of these two dimensions.
- 2). Use a pair of compasses and a pencil to draw two circles directly on the reverse side of your fabric, using the diameter plus 1 inch determined above. Cut out the circles.
- 3). Calculate the circumference of the circle by multiplying the diameter plus 1 inch of the pillow by pi (3.14). Make a note of the circumference -- this is the length of the boxing strip that will join the two circular sides of the pillow.
- 4). Use a pencil and ruler to draw a rectangle on the reverse side of the fabric that is equal to the circumference of the circle plus 1 inch in length, and the desired depth of the pillow plus 1 inch in width. Cut out the rectangle.
- 5). Fold the rectangle of fabric (the boxing strip) in half lengthwise so that the two short ends are held together with the right sides of fabric facing each other. Stitch along the short end leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. The boxing strip should now be joined into a loop.
- 6). Take one of the circular pieces of fabric and the boxing strip loop. Pin the strip around the circumference of the circular piece so that the right sides of the fabric are facing each other. Stitch all the way around this circular seam, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
- 7). Repeat Step 6, stitching the other edge of the boxing strip to the other circular piece of fabric, but this time leave a gap of 2 to 4 inches at the end of the seam.
- 8). Use scissors to snip into the two curved seams, up to but not into the stitching, at approximately 1-inch intervals. This will help the seams lie flat. Turn the piece right-sides out through the 2- to 4-inch gap you left in the final seam.
- 9). Insert the pillow form or stuffing through the gap in the seam. If you are using stuffing, stuff it in until your pillow is as firm as you like.
- 10
Thread a sewing needle and hand-stitch the gap in the seam closed. Use tiny stitches and keep them as neat as you can.
