How to Replace the Muffler on a Geo Tracker
- 1). Look to see if you need a new muffler on your Geo Tracker by looking under the vehicle towards the back end to see if there are any small or large holes in the muffler or to determine if it has fallen off partially or completely.
- 2). Purchase a new or used muffler for a Geo Tracker that corresponds with the year of your vehicle. It should be at least 71 inches in length and 12 inches wide. There are many different brands of muffler that range in price such as Bosal and Walker.
- 3). Place an old blanket or a large piece of cardboard on the ground beneath the rear part of the Geo Tracker. You can also put the rear part of the van onto jacks if desired. Make sure the vehicle is very secured so that it will not fall of off the jacks or roll backwards or forwards.
- 4). Examine the old muffler. Spray the fasteners generously with a penetrating lubricant before you loosen them. The penetrating lubricant will help you to remove the screws and bolts with ease.
- 5). Remove the old muffler from the Geo Tracker. Loosen all of the bolts with a crescent wrench that are around the muffler and take the muffler off. If the muffler is welded on, then you can break it away by knocking it with a sledge hammer or sawing it off with a hacksaw. Dispose of the old muffler properly by breaking it down into small parts. Put the small parts in a trash bag and throw away.
- 6). Replace the new muffler on your Geo Tracker. Line it up as straight as possible with the clamps and then tighten the bolts to hold it in place securely. The bolts should not be too tight because the muffler needs to move slightly to prevent damage. Make sure you hang the muffler with the muffler hangers that come with the muffler. Do not put it on too loosely or it may fall off the vehicle.
- 7). Start the engine on the Geo Tracker and check the new muffler for any leaks or loud sounds. If there are leaks or loud sounds, then you may need to tighten the clamps more.
