Sir Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan III
Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah, Aga Khan III (GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, GCVO and PC) was the 48th Hereditary Imam of the Isma'ili Shi'a Muslim Community. He was born in Karachi on 2 November 1977 in Karachi, Sindh to Aqa Ali Shah the Aga Khan II, the 47th Imam, & his third wife, Nawab A'lia Shamsul-Mulk, a granddaughter of Fath Ali Shah Qajar of Iran.
He was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatima bint Muhammad & his cousin & son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib & claimed the Imamate through the line of succession from Ali bin Abi Talib to Aqa Ali Shah Aga Khan II. He became the 49th Imam in 1885 at the age of seven & a half years. He was taught in Eastern & Oriental traditions as well as Western & European styles. He also attended Eton College & the University of Cambridge.
He was a prominent member of the Pakistan Independence Movement. In the 1906 Muhammadan Educational Conference meeting in Dhaka, when the All-India Muslim League was proposed, His Highness supported it a lot. He was elected the Second President of the Muslim League in 1908. He was also elected the Twenty-First President of the League of Nations in 1937. He became a Knight Commander of the Indian Empire in 1897 (by Queen Victoria) & Knight Grand Commander in 1902 (by Edward VII). He was also made a member of the Privy Council in 1934.
Under the Aga Khan leadership, Isma'ili communities in India & Pakistan prospered both economically, socially & politically. He also enacted the Isma'ili Constitution which lays out the basics for living to Isma'ilis. He also helped Non-Isma'ili Muslims in many ways. In 1957, They bought Gwadar for $1 million for reasons unknown, except for to him and to his family. Later, Gwadar became Pakistan's third port & supports Pakistan economically more than any other Balochi city. It was later revealed that knew that Gwadar would contribute in a great way to Pakistan's prosperity. Yet, the Aga Khan greatest gift to Pakistan was Urdu.
When he became President of the Muslim League, he started pressing for Urdu as a common language for 79,400,000 Muslims in the Subcontinent. Slowly, the future leaders were influenced by his calls for Urdu as India's national language along with English. His pressings were finally listened when the newly formed Government of Pakistan accepted his calls & declared Urdu national language of Pakistan in 1947. Even after that, because the people of Pakistan were divided on linguistic and racial lines, he formed the SMS Aga Khan School, to promote the use of Urdu and English. He also laid the basis for the Aga Khan University, the Aga Khan University Hospital & the Aga Khan Examination Board.
We at URDU Inc. follow Sir Sultan Mohammad Shah's work. With him as an ideal patron & role model, we wish to promote Urdu. English is a well spread language, but we want to spread Urdu to promote nationalism as the Aga Khan wanted. The Aga Khan was truly a man of conscience. We respect him and as part of his wishes, we will promote the English language as long as we can, & we know that you will help.
