The first silent Tamil movie released was Keechaka Vaadham.

Later in the year 1931 audio was introduced in the movies.

The company was started in the year 1930 in Coimbatore.
Later the company shifted its base to Chennai.
It is the oldest studio which is still functioning in the city.
The first theater which screened the silent movie in Chennai was Electric Theater.
The theater was built by the British people.
The theater was built in annasalai.
The theater lasted for few years only.
Now the building is a part of the post office complex.
Gaiety theater was built in the year 1912 by R.
Venkiah.
It is one of the oldest theaters in the city which is still functioning.
The first commercial Tamil movie was released in the year 1948 named chandralekha.
It was produced for a whooping cost of $600,000.
This is still the highest budget for the Tamil cinema.
The film was directed and produced by S.

Vasan.
The film was produced for over 5 years.
The film became a flop.
Later it was remake into Hindi.
Previously the budgets of the film were very low.
In the past there were very less audience who go to theaters to watch the movies.
