Entryways & Hallways: Benches, Furniture & Ideas

An Entryway That Has Everything

This entrance has everything you'd want or need. Lots of natural light, along with wall sconces, ensure that this space is well-lit. A durable rug helps trap dirt and debris before it gets too far into the home; an umbrella stand set right near the door makes wet, rainy mornings a bit more tolerable. An entry bench, tucked inside a nook, looks cozy enough for relaxation, but it's main purpose is to help people remove their shoes.

Clever shelving under the bench is open, making it easy to find what you need. Hooks are perfect for jackets and hats. These designers made sure to add decorative touches that make this entrance feel just as decorated as the rest of the home.

Fun, Functional & Family Friendly

This entry makeover was part of a whole-home redo for a family. The safe, neutral gray is offset by a fun punch of orange, and gives this entrance a real focal point. The repurposed mailboxes, also painted orange, gives a touch of whimsy to this space. A comfy, upholstered bench seat makes putting on (and taking off) shoes really easy. And shoes are easily stored underneath the bench. Even though this entry feature is about the size of a standard closet, there seems to be no shortage of storage space in all varieties.

Open cubbies, closed cupboards and hooks help keep this family organized. Small countertops are perfect for setting things down right when they walk in the door. Notice that this space is also really well lit, making this space even more functional.

This entrance is rather wide, and this designer took advantage by creating tall, built in storage pieces. This custom built cabinetry offers plenty of storage for jackets, shoes and backpacks. Open pull out baskets are perfect for seasonal gear like gloves and hats. The cabinetry is designed to blend in with the kitchen cabinetry, making this entrance feel part of a unified space. Chalkboard paint lets the family write notes or the weekly schedule in a fun way.

A small bench next to the cabinets make the perfect spot for putting on shoes. Tons of natural light flood the entrance, which helps make the space feel nice and bright.

This narrow entryway makeover didn't need a lot to make it shine, just some carefully placed objects. The rug tiles (try www.flor.com) make it easy to have a functional object but in a fun pattern or array of colors. Carpet tiles can be easily cut and allow you to create exactly the design you want. The walls were painted a dark color. In a larger room this color might feel heavy, but in a pass through room (like a hallway), dark colors can add drama.

One wall was treated like a gallery, with an eclectic collection of photos all framed in black frames and in a haphazard way. The other side simply features a mirror (also framed in black) and a mid-century modern bench. Benches work well in entrances as they can be the perfect spot for removing shoes or laying down a coat or purse. By keeping the furnishings simple, this entry hallway feels uncluttered and open.
