How to Install a Brick Walkway Edge
- 1). Select bricks for your project. Since bricks and pavers come in many styles, you may want to buy samples of different styles and test them out by laying them on top of the ground next to your walkway. This will give you a chance to see how they'll look in a realistic setting.
- 2). Measure out from the edge of the walkway to the width of your bricks as you'll place them. Make a line along this edge with marking paint of flour to give you a guide as you excavate the area where you'll be installing the bricks.
- 3). Dig out the area where the bricks will be installed. Use a shovel to dig to a depth that is two inches greater than the depth of the brick. Place the dirt you're shoveling into a bucket or wheelbarrow for disposal to make cleanup easier when you're done.
- 4). Fill in the excavated area with sand to a depth of two inches.
- 5). Place your bricks on top of the sand, one at a time. As you place each brick, give it a few sharp taps with a rubber mallet to set it firmly into the sand. Check periodically with a level to ensure that you're placing the bricks evenly and on the level.
- 6). Sprinkle a layer of sand on top of the bricks when they've been placed and firmly sweep the sand into the spaces between the bricks. This will help prevent the bricks from shifting position and will inhibit weeds from working into the spaces between the bricks.
