Liver Damage in Cats

14

    Associated Conditions

    • Examples of conditions associated with liver damage in felines include hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease; toxin damage; cancer; liver shunt; and inflammation of the biliary tract, medically known as cholangitis complex.

    Symptoms

    • Even though various conditions can cause liver damage, the symptoms are relatively the same. Owners should look for weight loss, lethargy, diarrhea, seizures, jaundice and bad breath.

    Treatment

    • Treatment of liver damage is solely dependent on the underlying cause. For fatty liver disease, veterinarians prescribe a strict diet management plan. More intensive care is required for shunt and cancer patients.

    Prognosis

    • Because the liver is a regenerative organ, the rate of recovery for affected cats, even in severe cases, is generally high. However, owners should consult with their veterinarians to make sure their cats are receiving prompt and accurate treatment for their condition.

    Warning

    • Felines affected by liver damage of any kind should be taken off all shellfish, organ meats and foods containing fishmeal. These foods contain an acid that damaged livers are not able to process.
