Dosing Differences in Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplements - What Is the Optimal Dose & Balance
A few years ago my pharmacist recommended I take omega 3 fatty acids, however what he failed to tell me about was the dosing differences in omega 3 fish oil supplements.
It's a big issue worth understanding and thinking about because none of us really like taking more pills or capsules then we really need to on a daily basis.
The soft gels I first started using recommended taking 2 capsules 3 times a day for a total of 6. I kept doing this religiously for a couple of years until I became more interested in researching and learning about the benefits of fatty acids.
I was very annoyed once I understood the issues and that the pharmacist had recommended a product that didn't give me the best blend or dosage of DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids.
Basically I was consuming a lot of fish oil with a reasonable amount EPA but with very little DHA. Once I understood that DHA is more complex and beneficial for your body, I immediately started looking for a better brand of capsules.
Therefore my advice to you is understand all the dosage issues before making a final decision on which brand you will go with.
After doing a lot of research on the Internet I chose a natural brand of fish oil manufactured by a small company based in New Zealand. I based my decision on the following:
1. -- To get the optimal amount of DHA and EPA fatty acids I only need to take two capsules a day.
2.-- The mix of fatty acids is two parts DHA to one part EPA plus a small part DPA, contributing to a total of 500 mg omega 3 in one 1000 mg fish oil soft gel.
