The Advantages of Natural Gas Cars
- While natural gas does contain methane, a greenhouse gas, most climate experts regard the emission of CO2 as the largest contributor to climate change. The use of natural gas in cars does not produce any CO2, and would make a large contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
- Natural gas can be made from renewable resources here in America; this will reduce American dependency on foreign oil, which has become a heated topic in recent years as we have had to outsource to supply our nation with fossil fuels. The United States is forced to import nearly 70 percent of its oil from overseas, while giving billions of dollars to oil-producing countries. Utilizing natural gas in our vehicles will help our country become more energy independent.
- Unlike other options such as hydrogen or solar-powered vehicles, natural gas is readily available and ready to be used as a transportation fuel. The United States already utilizes natural gas pipelines underground to provide energy to homes and the technology to convert natural gas to power vehicles is already in place.
- Because natural gas can be developed in the United States, cost fluctuations would become less apparent because price controls would be in our own hands, rather than being the decision of the worldwide market or oil-producing countries.
- Even if the United States had an abundance of fossil fuels, the excavation and refining of petroleum is dangerous and has caused environmental hazards in the past, such as oil-spills. Petroleum must be transported to its location by tanker trucks, which opens the possibility of a public spill and creates air pollution during distribution. A vast network of underground natural gas pipes already exists in most areas of the United States; this will allow for an easier and safer distribution to refilling stations.
