What Is a Hypertech Programmer?

39

    Fuel Management

    • In modern GM cars, there is an active fuel management system that dynamically changes parameters, such as the air-to-fuel ratio, based on the engine's operating environment and other status indicators. A Hypertech programmer can disable the active fuel management system altogether, which facilitates engine tuning and allows drivers to experience normal and unchanged power-bands as they accelerate. This is especially beneficial to GM car owners with larger engines who are towing and need smooth and uninterrupted power distribution.

    Rev Delimiting

    • From the factory, GM engines are programmed to rev only to certain maximum levels. This is intentionally done to prevent drivers from exceeding the mechanical limits of the engine and ensuring that the engine maintains a long and healthy life in the car. However, these rev limiters can sometimes be set conservatively low at the factory. GM sports car owners may want to tap into additional power by unlocking 500 to 1,000 additional RPMs to the maximum rev levels of their engines. While the Hypertech tool does allow people to do this, it's important to note that in doing so, drivers do open themselves up to an increased risk of engine damage.

    Transmission Adjustments

    • There are two primary adjustments that the Hypertech tool can make to GM automatic transmissions. The first is the firmness of the shifting. If you're towing a large pay load, you may want to increase the shifting firmness to reduce clutch slipping and ensure steady traction. The second adjustment that can be made is the specific automatic transmission shift points. The Hypertech tool allows owners to increase and decrease the points at which the transmission changes gears in increments of 100 RPMs. These tweaks can lead to quick acceleration and better 1/4-mile drag racing times for racers.

    Speedometer Calibration

    • When you upgrade your auto's wheels and tires to models that are larger or smaller than the factory equipment, the car's speedometer reading will become slightly less accurate due to the changes in wheel size. The Hypertech tool allows owners to reprogram their speedometers so that the dashboard accurately reflects the car's traveling speed and so that the automatic transmission is shifting at the correct speeds.
