    Lake Wallenpaupack

    • Lake Wallenpaupack is one of the better-known lakes for Pennsylvania fishing. Covering 5,700 acres, the lake is home to a number of species of gamefish including smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, muskellunge, pickerel, yellow perch, trout, striped bass and panfish. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission operates a free boat launch at Mangan Cove, and the lake is open to fishermen, boaters, campers, and water skiers. The lake is a part of the state's Cooperative Fish Habitat Improvement Program, and fish habitat structures have been placed in the lake in various places over the years.

    Allegheny Reservoir

    • Also known as Kinzua Lake, the 24-mile-long Allegheny Reservoir is on the border between Pennsylvania and New York, and was the home of both states' record walleyes as of March 2010. May and June are top months for walleye fishing, and while walleye are the most sought-after fish here, the reservoir is also home to excellent fishing for muskellunge and pike. Numerous campgrounds and cabin rentals are in and around the Allegheny National Forest, and boat launches are available in Big Bend, Elijah Run, Webbs Ferry, and Kiasutha Campground.

    High Point Lake

    • Located near Mount Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania, this 338-acre lake provides good angling opportunities for largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, black crappie, bluegill and bullhead. High Point Lake has been under Panfish Enhancement Special Regulations with a 9-inch minimum for yellow perch since 2000. The lake is also stocked annually with walleye fingerlings. There are two launch ramps with parking facilities on High Point Lake, and boating is limited to unpowered boats and electric motors.

    Lake Somerset

    • Lake Somerset, at 253 acres, is a top bass lake in Pennsylvania, and is managed by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission under its Big Bass Program. This means fishing for both smallmouth and largemouth bass is closed to harvest from April 17 through June 11; all bass must be released during this period. Minimum keeper size the rest of the year is 15 inches, with a combined limit of four for both species of bass. The lake is also stocked with channel catfish, muskellunge, redear sunfish and walleye. Boats are limited to electric motors and unpowered boats, and two launch facilities are on the lake.

    Lake Erie

    • Best known for its trophy steelhead, Lake Erie's Pennsylvania waters are home to virtually every species of freshwater gamefish. The Presque Isle area is a top destination for most of these fish, particularly big smallmouth bass. Lake Erie is designated a "big bass" water, so until mid-June, only one smallmouth bass may be kept, and it must be over 20 inches. Bass fishing shines during summer, which is also prime time for walleye fishing. Trolling for steelhead and salmon just off the mouths of tributaries is popular in September and October. There are countless marinas and boat launches along the Lake Erie shore.
