How to Flounder Fish From the Shore

38
    • 1). Select a fishing location with bottom structure and tidal flow. Flounder are "ambush predators," meaning they like to sit on the bottom, camouflaged, waiting for unsuspecting prey to swim by. Accordingly, the best places to find flounder are inlets and passes that have plenty of water flow and bottom features, such as rocks, bridge pilings or drop-offs, in which the flounder can hide.

    • 2). Use a bait or lure that will sink down almost to the bottom. As their flat shape would suggest, flounder spend their lives on or very close to the sea floor. As such, it is important to present the lure or bait very close to the bottom. Live baits, including mud minnows, finger mullet or menhaden, are among the most popular flounder baits, and should be fished using a heavy weight that will allow the bait to sink. For those wanting to use lures, plastic-tail and bucktail jigs -- both of which mimic small baitfish -- can be extremely effective.

    • 3). Cast your bait or lure well up-current and allow the bait to move with the tide. The goal is to let the bait move as naturally as possible, so that it looks like a small fish being swept along in the current. When the bait has moved past you and further down-current, reel in the bait and re-cast.
