How to Avoid Distractions in the Workplace

    • 1). Get rid of the Internet browser on your work computer. If you don't use the Internet for your job, consider deleting the browser to limit the amount of time you spend surfing the net or conducting personal business while at work.

    • 2). Turn off your phone ringer or keep the device in your purse. Constant phone calls or text messages from friends and family can slow productivity and keep you distracted. Consider leaving your cellular in your car, or turn off the device completely while at work.

    • 3). Ask to telecommute. If you can't get your work completed in the office due to constant distractions, ask your boss or supervisor to consider a telecommute arrangement that allows you to work from home every day or a few days a week.

    • 4). Set daily goals. Decide which tasks you need to complete at the beginning of each day, and then give yourself a time limit for completing each assignment.

    • 5). Keep your office door closed to prevent coworkers from entering your workspace to socialize or converse about nonwork-related issues.

    • 6). Talk to your supervisor. If a certain coworker(s) has a habit of interrupting or disrupting your day, speak to your boss, manager or supervisor and make him aware of the situation. He can then speak with this individual to help stop distractions.
