Age Discrimination in the Employment Act of 1986
- According to the Northern Illinois University Library the ADEA was introduced in 1967. U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed the amended ADEA into law on Oct 31, 1986 and it became effective January 1, 1987.
- The ADEA protected workers between the ages of 40 and 70 from employment discrimination because of age. Northern Illinois University reports the 1986 amendment removed the cap on age discrimination at 70.
- According to Northern Illinois University, certain occupations are excluded from protection from enforcing a maximum age limit. Where an age limit can be proved to be a qualification in occupations such as firefighters and police officers a maximum age can be enforced.
