How to Draw a Man Standing
- 1). Decide where the man is standing, as you need to add detail to the drawing to show this. He could be waiting to cross a road, walking up a mountain or standing in a line, so think about what you want to draw first, before you start to draw it.
- 2). Draw the outline of the man in the position you want. Proportion his body. First, draw a circle to represent his head, then his body from neck to feet is between six and seven times the length of his head. Add two lines for his arms and two lines for his legs.
- 3). Add the features around him that demonstrate he is standing up. An abstract drawing might place him on top of the world, for example, so draw a large round sphere beneath him for the Earth. Alternatively, add the shape of a car or horse next to him to keep it simple.
- 4). Sketch detail onto the outline of the man's shape. Hold the pencil loosely and use light pencil strokes to give shading to areas on his face, such as along his cheekbones. Smudge the pencil using your finger to give his hair texture and avoid harsh lines.
- 5). Draw cylinders to guide you when drawing the man's legs. Then, add trousers on top. Make sure his legs are in proportion to the rest of the body, especially the torso.
- 6). Give the impression of character through his clothing, accessories, facial expression or stance. For example, if you are drawing a policeman, make sure the man is standing up very straight and in costume. A policeman wears a distinct uniform and may be holding a gun.
- 7). Continue to fill in the background information of the drawing. Create a setting for your character by illustrating weather for atmosphere, or buildings to demonstrate a specific location. A man protesting, for example, might be holding a banner outside a large institution.
- 8). Look at the drawing and make amendments. Fine-tune the dimensions of the man's face, hands or body by erasing them and trying again if you feel they are wrong.
