Interprofessional Education and Practice
Interprofessional Education and Practice
As an advanced practice nurse in the United States where the author practices as a neonatal nurse practitioner in both level III and level II neonatal intensive care units, the author feels the burden to incorporate the essence of IPE into educational programming to effectively translate the purpose of IPE into professional practice. Those who are educated in the concept of IPE must engage in active demonstration of what interprofessional collaboration leads to at the bedside, in the delivery/operating room, and on daily rounds.
Looking back on the history of how the complexity of the neonatal care has increased in the US in the last 50 years and how various roles such as transport nurse, nurse clinician or the nurse practitioner roles emerged to work in collaboration with each other surrounding the vulnerable infants, the author acknowledges that the interprofessional educational opportunities and interprofessional collaborative practices have long existed in the US.
