How to Run Water in Freezing Temperatures
- 1). Turn your thermostat to 55 degrees Fahrenheit and open the cabinet doors to let the pipes warm. Doing this will make running your water more effective and help ensure your pipes don't freeze.
- 2). Find the faucet in the house--whether in the bathroom, kitchen or laundry room--that's furthest from the water meter.
- 3). Turn on the faucet so water comes out steadily--not full blast or very slowly. Aim for a thin, constant stream of water moving through the pipes in the house to prevent freezing.
- 4). Turn off the water when temperatures climb back above freezing. You only need to run the water when the temperature outside is below freezing.
