How to Grow Herbs in a Hanging Basket
- 1). Purchase a hanging basket and bracket arm from a garden store. Choose a sturdy metal or solid plastic model. The bigger the better, but a 1- to 1 1/2-foot-diameter basket will be sufficient.
- 2). Screw the bracket into a wall using an electric drill. A protected location with a little shade for some of the day but lots of sunlight for the majority is ideal. Make sure the bracket is firmly fixed to the wall. The basket is heavy when filled with soil and water.
- 3). Fill your basket with a light compost. Mix in a handful of perlite and add some slow-release general purpose fertilizer. Check your fertilizer packaging for exact dosage.
- 4). Choose your herb seeds. Suitable herbs include lavender, thyme, sage, basil, tarragon, parsley and many others.
- 5). Insert the seeds into the pot using your thumb and fingers. Most species only require shallow sowing, though consult your seed pack for details. Water the basket with a generous sprinkle. Check that water is running through drainage holes at the bottom. If not, prick a few holes in the liner base with a screwdriver.
- 6). Attach the basket to the bracket arm. Water the plants daily, but don't allow the soil to get sludgy and wet. After a few weeks add a little more fertilizer. Leafy herbs such as basil and parsley should be frequently harvested to encourage further growth of sweet fresh buds.
