Trout Fishing in Little Red River, Arkansas
- The source of the Little Red River is in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. The river has three branches, which run through the mountains and surrounding counties of northern central Arkansas until they converge in Greers Ferry Lake, outside the town of Heber Springs. The lake is created by the Greers Ferry Dam and has two sections, connected by a gorge called the Narrows. The lake has an area of 40,500 acres. The dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and dedicated by President John F. Kennedy in his last public appearance before the assassination.
- Greers Ferry Lake is stocked with rainbow trout since 1965 by the Greers Ferry National Hatchery, which is run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The brown trout was introduced illicitly in the 1970s, and reproduces in the lake and rivers. The hatchery also stocks brook trout.
The lake is stocked with other game fish, in particular walleye, by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, which also stocks the north fork of the Little Red River and the White River with cutthroat trout. - Greers Ferry Lake has turned into a recreation spot since the dam was opened in 1963. There are 19 different parks around the lake, maintained by the state of Arkansas, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the local governments. Park facilities include bathing beaches, camping, and boat ramps and marinas.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the fishing is best below the dam, where the outflow creates good living conditions for the fish. - Fishing guides and outfitters, both for fly fishers and anglers, can be found in the town of Heber Springs. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains campgrounds, several with hookups for RVs, around Greers Ferry Lake. Some of the campgrounds have more than 100 campsites. There are also a number of fishing lodges around the lake.
- A fishing license is required to fish for trout in Little Red River. Special licenses are available for seniors above 65, and anyone below 16 does not need a license. The price of the license is different for residents and non-residents. A separate trout permit is required for trout fishing. Arkansas has reciprocal agreements with Missouri, Tennessee and Mississippi regarding licenses for state citizens.
There is a daily limit of five trout of all species. It is legal to catch game fish using spear guns. Fishing is year-round except in designated catch-and-release areas, where the season is October 31 to December 31.
