How to Make Magician's Capes for Kids
- 1). Measure from your child's shoulders to his knees and add 6 inches for hems. Buy a length of suitable fabric to that measurement. Choose something in a dramatic color, such as red or black. Alternatively, choose glittery fabric for a real showman's cape. Buy an additional length of fabric in a contrasting color to use as a lining fabric.
- 2). Lay the two rectangles of fabric flat with the right sides facing each other. Tape the edges of the cape by measuring 6 inches in from both edges of fabric at one end of the rectangle. Make a mark with dressmaker's chalk.
- 3). Draw a line from the mark you have made to the outside edge at the opposite end of the rectangle. Cut through both layers of fabric, working carefully along the line.
- 4). Sew a hem along the two long sides and wide bottom edge of the cape. Alternatively, you can use fabric glue to hold the seams in place.
- 5). Turn the cape right side out and iron the seams flat. Make a double fold at the top edge of the cape and sew the hem in place.
- 6). Add stick-on Velcro tabs at the top corners of the cap for fastening.
- 7). Glue or sew gold braid or ribbon around the edges of the cape.
- 8). Cut a large star shape from colored felt and glue it to the back of the cape.
