The term "copywriter" is often confused with the term "copyright." A person with a career in copyright law is not a copywriter.

A copyright does have something to do with an author's work, but only as it pertains to the ownership rights of the finished work.

A copywriter description is someone who writes words and text to promote something, such as a product. These writers are also referred to as ghostwriters, freelance authors, technical writers, and web content creators.

Technical writing is a bit different because the content is created to inform and instruct the reader, as in instructional manuals. A copywriter, for example, creates ad copy to promote a specific brand of digital camera. The technical author creates the instructional manual on how to use the camera. Many writers are capable of both.

Business writing is used in many different applications. It is not restricted to article writing or sales copy. Ghostwriters are also hired to write eBooks, resumes, technical and medical journals, web content, brochures, sales copy, cover letters, mail order catalogs, newsletters, email broadcasts, search engine optimization content, answering machine script, white papers, and more.

A mere few years ago, independent freelance copywriters were rare. Those that did exist were usually in between jobs. As new writing opportunities have grown over the years, so has the availability of independent freelance authors.

While new freelancers do appear on the market every day, not all of them write good copy. Writing skill and talent varies greatly among copywriters. What distinguishes good writers from bad ones?

* Proper education in English, including punctuation, spelling, grammar

* Creative ability and writing talent

* Strong proofreading and high level research skills

* Usable knowledge gained through life experiences

* Strong vocabulary skills

Some writers work together as a team. They collaborate on the content; the finished work benefits from the insight, knowledge, and talent of all team writers combined. The value of the work is enhanced from the enrichment of the group in their collaborative efforts.

While there are independent writers available for just about any type of content you can imagine, there are also writers (non-independent) who are employed by companies to write copy solely for them. Careers exist for writers at advertising agencies, public relations firms, publishers of newspapers and magazines, web development companies, and book publishers.

Screen and investigate any writer you plan to hire. It is very convenient to utilize affordable copywriters to generate content that will market and promote your business. The success of the promotion depends on the quality of the content, however. Cheap is not always best.

Ask for writing samples, references, a list of published works, and a testimonials page (actual and authentic testimonials). The samples should reflect a true grasp of the English language and the ability of the writer to put thoughts fluently and effectively into words.
