The Best Illustrated Children"s Books of the 2014
Introduction
This is the seventh year that I have developed my own personal annual list of the best in illustrated kids' books. My Top 10 list of the Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2014 includes two wordless picture books, a fairy tale retelling, a picture book biography, a graphic novel, a graphic memoir and more. See The Best Illustrated Children's Books of the Year for overviews of all of my lists and links to each of them, from 2008 to the present.
Title: The Scraps Book: Notes From a Colorful Life
Author and Illustrator: Lois Ehlert, author and illustrator of numerous excellent picture books, includingLeaf ManandSnowballs. Ehlert also illustratedMiceby Rose FylemanandChicka Chicka Boom Boomby Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault.
Overview: Award-winning author and illustrator Lois Ehlert is not just a talented creator of picture books, she is equally adept at explaining, through words and illustrations, the process she goes through in developing her books, from getting ideas, to creating a storyboard, the collage illustrations and the words. It is fascinating to learn about her creative life and to get in on all of the behind the scenes work that goes into creating a picture book.
Lois Ehlert covers many of the subjects aspiring young writers and illustrators grapple with: Where do I get ideas? What’s a storyboard; how do I use one? How can I illustrate my story? Ehlert presents the information in a way that is inspiring, not overwhelming.
It is her emphasis on using book’s illustrations to more fully get information across to the reader that makes The Scraps Book so interesting and effective. For details, read my full review of The Scraps Book.
