Why Your Children Should Get Involved in Wildlife Conservation
The human populations are booming, cities and towns are expanding at a rapid rate, natural resources are being depleted and natural habitats are being decimated.
Worse than all of this is that hardly anything is being done to correct the damage, which is being caused.
Since 2010 over 1700 African rhinoceros have been poached in South Africa.
They are poached due to the fact that certain Asian cultures believe the horns, which are made from keratin, carry medicinal values, curing many ailments from hang over's to cancer.
Every year over 30000 elephants are killed due to the high demand of ivory sales on the black market.
The ivory is used for ornamental purposes, and symbolizes wealth and prosperity.
Even free roaming African lion populations have plummeted to a mere 15000 from a population of 100000 strong in the 1900's, this is due to lost of habitat, poaching as well as the demand of trophy hunts from local and foreign tourists.
All of the animal species mentioned above are apart of Africa's "big five", the life line to Africa's tourism industry.
The lost of these species would not only be destructive to the tourism sector, but it would also cripple the biodiversity of the African plains.
Biodiversity not only affects the animal kingdom but the human race as well.
Bringing up your child to appreciate and enjoy the environment from an early age is critical to the future survival of the natural eco-system and many of the species living today.
Children need to understand the importance of nature, how one species affects another, and how the environment is highly beneficial the human race.
Even more importantly children need to see the beauty of nature and the reason why it needs to be preserved.
Only through the education of today's children will we see a change in the environmental collapse that is currently being noticed.
Children have the power of breaking cultural beliefs, proving the use of animal products ineffective and curbing the natural eco-systems into a positive growth, not the downward spiral that is being experienced.
All living eco-systems form a chain and we cannot survive with a broken link within it, a collapse within one eco-system will lead to the destruction in all of the others as well.
Wildlife is our heritage no matter where you live in the world, and our children hold the key to restoring the environment to its former glory-they just need the opportunity to do so.
